By the end of the nineteenth century, the tradition of “Japanning” was well established in the West Midlands of England. The process involved applying synthetic lacquers to mostly tin plate, papier-mâché and wood in order to emulate the style of black-lacquered goods from China, India and Japan.
The Birmingham Guild of Handicraft was one of the most radical groups of the Arts and Crafts movement to apply the method. Contrary to the trends of the time, the guild adopted an approach focussed on puritanical austerity that it especially employed in the production of decorative metal accessories. The guild began as the Kyrle Society, with a mission to “bring beauty home to the people”.
