In Norse mythology, the concept of fate is closely linked with the spinning of textile. For centuries, the country people of Scandinavia created their own fabrics with designs heavily inspired by nature and the legends of the Viking Age.
At the centre sits Yggdrasil, the great cosmological tree, its branches extending to all else that exists and connecting the heavenly realm of Asgard and the earthly region of Midgard. The Sun and Moon are depicted by a deer and rooster, symbolising destruction and resurrection whilst barre style interlacing represents the Earth, surrounded by the units of night and day.
